Justice for Breonna Taylor Poster
The fight isn’t over in demanding justice for Breonna Taylor.
In an effort to evoke her power and beauty, I referenced Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus” painting for two main reasons. The first, was recognizing how Venus was the goddess of love, lush gardens and nurturing/giving life (non sexualized notions of fertility.) Breonna embodies all of these, as a young EMT worker who worked up to 15 hour shifts, and loved giving hands-on care to those in pain. She was known for telling jokes and bringing board games to slow shifts at the hospital in order to bring joy to colleagues. According to her family, everything she did was out of love.
The second purpose, was that this painting is one of the most famous in the world—praised by elite scholars & historians for centuries. This is a moment to shift the gaze of the powerful to a woman and a life that deserves equal reverence, more in fact. She deserves to be commemorated for the rest of time, the rest of history, and she deserves for the world to know her.
